Updated March 5, 2018
Hello Fairview neighbours,
I’m sure many of you have heard the news about the Fairview Arena, and I wanted to take the time to make sure that you are kept up to date on this matter.
On February 20, 2018, during City Council, my colleagues and I began receiving reports of a roof collapse at the Fairview Arena. On February 19, the building had been evacuated due to observed problems with a roof truss.
The Calgary Fire Department has confirmed that there were no injuries and that steps have been taking to ensure the safety of community residents.
While the work of investigating this problem is underway by City of Calgary safety codes officers, it isn’t clear how long the facility will be closed.
Since February 21, new information has become available to me.
I have learned that the arena portion of the building will be demolished. It has also been confirmed that the office area of the arena is undamaged, but is unusable at this time.
The City of Calgary has contracted out 2 reports to confirm what has happened:
- A Causation Report (due in one month) that will outline the cause of the collapse. I have been instructed that snow and ice have been ruled out as a cause.
- A Costing Report (due after the delivery of the Causation Report) that will identify what it will cost to bring the building back to its former state.
While The City continues the work of investigating this matter, I will be working with Calgary Recreation and Calgary Neighbourhood Services and the tenants of this building, namely, the Fairview Community Association, In-Definite Arts and the Southern Alberta Women’s Hockey Association, to ensure that their valuable work in the community continues and we can get this facility and community hub back up and running as soon as possible.
