Inglewood has deep roots: As Calgary’s oldest community, established in 1875, it was originally known as the neighbourhoods of East Calgary, Brewery Flats, Pearce Estates, and Inglewood. Historically, this area was a winter camping site for the Indigenous people in the area. It was an attractive spot due to the shelter provided by the trees along the river and the warm westerly winds we know as Chinooks.
Our Inglewood neighbours take immense pride in their rich history as Calgary’s founding community and work hard to ensure we preserve and share this history as Calgarians. Just east of Fort Calgary, Inglewood was voted Canada’s best neighbourhood in 2014. Through the promotion of arts and culture and the revitalization of its main street, 9 Avenue SE, which is known for its vibrant collection of shops and famed restaurants, Inglewood is embracing the future as well as the past. Home to many amenities, it isn’t hard to spend an entire day in Inglewood. From the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery, to the birthplace of Music Mile, to the serene Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, and the haunted rooms of the Deane House, Inglewood has something for everyone.
On Saturday, May 4. Inglewood and Ramsay volunteers will come together to give the neighbourhood a spring cleaning - Spruce Up Inglewood and Ramsay, The City of Calgary Pathway and River cleanup, and self-led community clean-ups will take place during the morning of May 4th. Following the cleanup, community members are invited to gather for a community BBQ at the Inglewood Community Hall.
Sign up for one of several public clean-up areas around the community, or a volunteer shift at the community BBQ.
We are replacing the water main on 12 Street SE between 8 Avenue SE and 11 Avenue SE. The Phase 1 Hydrovac work is complete, and the water main extension will begin the week of May 6th, 2024. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.
One of the best days of the year is just around the corner! Neighbour Day is Calgary’s celebration of community connection. Held each year on the third Saturday in June, Neighbour Day is a step toward creating welcoming and inclusive communities where neighbours connect and belong every day of the year.
Neighbour Day 2024 will include two kick-off events on May 4 to help raise awareness of Neighbour Day and invite Calgarians to start planning their own Neighbour Day block party or community event for June 15.
Jane’s Walk 2024 is back and taking place May 3rd through 5th. Calgarians of all ages are invited to participate in free walking tours throughout a variety of communities and areas of interest in the city!
A global event inspired by and in honour of Jane Jacobs, an urbanist and activist who championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Jane believed that in order to properly observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging, we need to get out and walk the city.
The City is preparing to replace the water main on 12 Street SE between 8 Avenue SE and 11 Avenue SE.
In advance of construction, hydrovac work is tentatively scheduled to begin on April 20, 2024, on 12 Street SE and 8 Ave SE. This work will take approximately two days to complete and requires that a section of the northbound lane be closed. One lane will remain open for two-way traffic, controlled by on-site Police.
The City of Calgary has begun Phase Two of the Inglewood Sanitary Trunk (IST) project. As residents living near the project area, we want to share the below construction update so you are informed and to answer potential questions you may have.
The City is investing in Ramsay/Inglewood to keep the community safe, beautiful and vibrant.
With several City projects scheduled this season, we do our best to coordinate work schedules and ensure we’re delivering the right projects at the right time, with as little disruption to the communities as possible
Community Cleanup events save residents a trip to the landfill for items that do not fit in their black carts. The City of Calgary suppled packer trucks with crews, funds for advertising and promotion, face coverings, sanitizer, gloves, and garbage bags for community volunteers. This service is free of charge to all Calgarians.
All Community Cleanup events occur on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the spring and fall session.
Please note, the dates listed below are subject to change Please check with your local Community Association for more information regarding specific details and times of events, and opportunities to volunteer.
The following communities in Ward 9 have registered to host a Community Cleanup event this year.
he 4th Avenue Flyover will undergo rehabilitation starting in April 2024. This work is planned to carry through winter 2024-2025 and be completed in the Fall of 2025 . This flyover was constructed in 1982 and at an overall 430-meter span, the structure crosses over the Bow River and is Calgary's longest bridge. The flyover carries two lanes of traffic towards 3rd Street S.E. and is one of the primary routes into downtown.
The 4th Avenue Flyover Rehabilitation Project is part of our normal rehabilitation program as this bridge was identified as a candidate for repair.
As The City work towards finalizing the design for the rehabilitation of the Blackfoot Trail over 9th Avenue S.E. bridge, we will need to conduct an inspection of the underside of the bridge. To facilitate this inspection, 9th Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic from 15 Street S.E. to 16 Street S.E. starting February 8th at 9 p.m. and will re-open the following morning on February 9th at 5 a.m.
Calgary is in a housing crisis. We need more homes. The citywide rezoning proposed in Home is Here: The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy will help.
How will rezoning help?
This change will help increase the supply of housing to better meet demand by reducing the costs and timelines for permit approvals. This means more housing is able to be built faster. It also allows for greater housing variety, options, and price points to suit more Calgarians needs.
If you’re renting or buying, rezoning increases the number and types of homes available in all communities, making homes more affordable. If you own property, you’ll have more options to meet your future needs.
The City of Calgary is preparing to begin Phase Two of the Inglewood Sanitary Trunk (IST) project.
The IST Phase Two project will increase the waster capacity of Inglewood and other north Calgary communities; it involves micro-tunneling beneath the Bow River to connect two existing sanitary pipes.
Inglewood and Ramsay residents are invited to an afternoon of caroling, gingerbread house making, card and ornament making, bake sale, bar, games, silent auction, and more!!! Free entry. Cash/debit bar, concession and gingerbread house kits.
To meet the current and projected wastewater needs, we have added 3.5 km of new sanitary pipe (Phase One) and will be adding another 600 m of sanitary pipe (Phase Two). This new trunk is critical to maintaining a high-level of sanitary service to Inglewood and surrounding communities.
In early December, City crews will begin setting up the construction area on the south side of the Bow River. They will be creating a safe, protected space so they can mobilize and start work quickly in the new year. We are confirming construction timelines for 2024 and will ensure this page is kept up-to-date.
As the GreenLine LRT begins to shift from planning to implementation, we are at a place where key challenges and opportunities associated with the current GreenLine station designs in Ward 9 need to be addressed. These challenges and opportunities are grounded in the perspective I have as a 10+ year advocate and champion of the GreenLine in my role as the area’s City Councillor, as well as my 20+ year role as an urban design professional working with East Calgary Communities towards the transit-oriented future we are now on the brink of achieving.
From November 30th - December 10th, we will be collecting donations for the Calgary Food Bank as part of the Mayor’s Annual Food Drive.
Like Food Banks across the country, the Calgary Food Bank has seen an unprecedented increase in demand this past year. In 2022, Council raised just over $80,000 in food and funds for Calgarians in need. We hope to surpass that number this year.
As the GreenLine project continues towards the start of main construction, communities along the future LRT line will start to see changes as Early Works projects are undertaken. These projects pave the way for future GreenLine transit infrastructure, help minimize project risks, and create efficiencies for construction of GreenLine tracks, stations, tunnels, and bridges.
The City of Calgary is updating plans that will shape the Calgary of the future and make sure our city keeps on being a great place to live. We want to hear from you.
Calgary is a city of opportunity and choice. As our city’s population approaches two million, The City of Calgary must prepare to support this growth. The City Building program will align and strengthen The City’s plans and tools to create a place where everyone can thrive.
The City of Calgary is investing in one of Calgary's oldest neighbourhoods to keep it safe, beautiful, and vibrant. With the recent completion of the new 9 Avenue S.E. bridge and updates to the CPKC Rail bridge and tracks, plus the future installation of the Green Line LRT bridge, we are looking to potentially improve and expand the pathway on the east side of the Elbow River between the Bow River and the McDonald Bridge, including underneath the 9 Avenue S.E. bridge. Improving this pathway would improve accessibility and connectivity for all Calgarians between the communities of Inglewood and Ramsay, the future LRT station, the River Walk and other connecting pathways, and surrounding amenities.
A beloved wildlife sanctuary in Calgary has received much-needed upgrades to repair flood damage and erosion, improve water quality and restore habitats for the birds, fish and other animals that call the park home.
Established in 1929 as one of the first migratory bird sanctuaries in the country, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is the only federally-recognized urban facility of its kind in Canada. Over time, human use, natural processes and large-scale events – such as the 2013 flood – have impacted the park's features, including the 100-year old lagoon, outlets and channels. The outfall structures, which regulate water levels, reached the end of their lifecycle and the inlet to the lagoon was filled with sediment, disconnecting the lagoon from the river and impacting water and wildlife health as well as fish passage through the area
As we prepare for the Ramsay-Inglewood GreenLine Station, The City is making a series of community public realm improvements to support future Transit Oriented Development (TOD).
The Ramsay-Inglewood Public Realm Improvements project will improve connections to transit and nearby public spaces. We’re investing in these two central communities as part of our Transit Oriented Development (TOD) program, so they can continue to thrive as they grow. This work supports our investment in the future light rail transit station. It also invests in better public spaces in advance of several nearby proposed developments. Our goal is to invest in Ramsay and Inglewood’s futures as vibrant, sustainable, and interesting communities.
Beginning October 12, Green Line’s Development Partner, Bow Transit Connectors, will be undertaking a series of borehole tests in the area surrounding the future 26 Avenue SE LRT station (around Ramsay and Highfield). Impacts are limited to City-owned and private property and are not expected to impact general traffic in the area. Each investigation is expected to take one-to-two days. Where there are potential impacts to businesses, Green Line will coordinate directly with those who may be affected.
After three hard and emotional days, City Council voted 12-3 to pass the Housing Strategy in its entirety. The actions outlined in this strategy make up a comprehensive and critically needed framework to address housing affordability, ensuring more Calgarians have a safe place to call home.
Over 1,322 pages of written submissions were sent in, 162 members of the public came out to speak, and our office received hundreds of emails. Overwhelmingly, the stories of those desperate to find or keep a roof over their head are the ones that dominated the conversation.
You can read the full Housing Strategy report and all 66 of the recommendations HERE.

The City needs to replace the existing watermain on 9 Avenue S.E. between 12 Street and 13 Street S.E. due to its age, and condition. We will also be installing a new section of watermain in the intersection of 9 Avenue and 12 Street S.E. as part of this work.
We heard from businesses how important certainty of start dates is for this work, and we want to confirm this work will start the week of September 20, 2023.
As many industries have experienced over the last several years, the City of Calgary continues to experience challenges in recruiting and hiring certificated candidates for swim instructors and lifeguards. These staffing shortages have resulted in reduced operational capacity and program cutbacks.
As a result, over the summer, the City needed to reduce operations at several smaller community aquatic centres in order to increase capacity at some of the bigger pools. Our hope was that service levels would be able to resume this fall, however, amendments are still needed at this time.
Calgary is experiencing a housing crisis.
Our city has grown significantly over the past several years and, at this moment, one in five Calgary households are unable to afford where they currently live. This equates to more than 80,000 households who are spending more than 30% of their income on housing. As we anticipate welcoming another 110,000 new residents over the next four years, the scale of the challenge we face is significant.

Calgary’s 17th annual Bike to Work Day is taking place on Friday, May 3rd, 2024!
BTWD brings together like-minded Calgarians to promote cycling as a viable means of transportation, reduce inner-city traffic congestion, and reduce pollution in the air. Cycling is a great addition to a healthy lifestyle and can be very cost-effective – not to mention how much time is saved by not sitting in traffic.
This spring, and effective immediately, the City of Calgary is implementing a Water Reductions Advisory, asking Calgarians to reduce their water use and make every drop count. As more and more people begin their outdoor yard work, it is important to remember that Alberta continues to experience high levels of drought. Together, we can make every drop count and help manage water supply in the Bow and Elbow Rivers.
Alberta Bike Swap provides a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bikes, fund safe CAN-BIKE cycling education, provide bike racks, pledge cyclists in charity rides, and help others with transportation security. Annual events happen in both Calgary and Edmonton. Over the last 14 years, Alberta Bike Swap has helped thousands of people find their perfect bike.

Both sessions will align with a free community meal.
The City of Calgary is exploring a Land Use change and public space improvements at the Franklin CTrain Station, located in the community of Albert Park/Radisson Heights.
The project area includes the south Park’n’Ride lot of the station, nearby park space, and the appearance of a portion of Radcliffe Drive SE. The focus of the project is to improve mobility, connectivity, and safety to and from Franklin Station, and prepare the site for future residential development to help address current housing shortages and affordability.
Once complete, the project will create a vibrant, affordable, and sustainable community.
Since 2017, the Federation of Calgary Communities has provided communities and organizations with microgrant funding opportunities through the ActivateYYC program. These grants contribute to the transformation of space-to-place throughout Calgary's landscape, and foster valuable community connections in the process.
Do you or your organization have the next great idea involving placemaking, traffic calming, tactical urbanism, public art, activating underutilized spaces, or other ways to increase the quality of your neighbourhood spaces? You and your community could receive up to $5,000 to put towards your project.
