Bridge Expansion Joint Replacement - 17th Ave SE + Bonnybrook Bridge

The City through its annual bridge inspection program has identified deterioration of expansion joints at various bridge locations across the City and scheduled repairs on a priority basis. Eight structures were completed under the program in 2021/2022 and seven more are scheduled to be completed this year.

The timely repair/replacement of these joints must be carried out to maintain a safe traffic service and prevent future unplanned road closures. This project will extend the service life of the bridges and improve safety for drivers.

10th Annual Neighbour Day - Saturday, June 17th!

Neighbour Day started in June 2014 to celebrate the incredible outpouring of support and generosity of neighbours following the 2013 floods. Each year on the third Saturday in June, we continue to celebrate one of the things that makes Calgary such a great city — our strong and caring communities.

Now is the time to start planning! The 10th annual Neighbour Day will be held on Saturday, June 17 and provides the opportunity for Calgarians to celebrate our community spirit and kindness by helping to facilitate enjoyable activities for everyone!

Compostable Pet Waste Pilot

A pilot project to test the feasibility of composting pet waste from off-leash dog parks kicked off on April 3. Tom Campbell’s Hill in Ward 9 and Queen’s Park Village in Ward 4 were selected for this pilot. The parks will be set up with modified green bins and ample signage encouraging pet owners to place pet waste in certified compostable bags in the green bins onsite.

Because the success of this pilot relies almost exclusively on resident actions, it is important for pet owners to be conscious of the type of bag they are using to collect pet waste before using the green compost bins.

Ward 9 Jane's Walk Roundup!

Jane’s Walk 2023 is taking place May 5, 6 + 7. Calgarians of all ages are invited to participate in free walking tours throughout the city!

A global event inspired by and in honour of Jane Jacobs, an urbanist and activist who championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Jane believed that in order to properly observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging, we need to get out and walk the city.

2023 Community Cleanup Dates

Community Cleanup events save residents a trip to the landfill for items that do not fit in their waste and recycling carts or for residents who do not have access to cart service. This service is free of charge to all Calgarians.

Jane's Walk 2023: The Death and Life of Inglewood

Join Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra as he interprets Inglewood through the books of Jane Jacobs and evokes discussion on neighbourhoods. This walk will discuss Jane’s first and last books as illustrated by a couple of blocks within Inglewood. Our community faced the same threats, within the same era, that Jane Jacob’s Greenwich Village faced in NYC. The Death and Life of Great American Cities, while not ours, is a testament to the power and the beauty of communities at their best in the face of the worst – it is almost ours.

FOREST LAWN PARK REDEVELOPMENT

The Forest Lawn Community Association has partnered with the Parks Foundation to bring a new amenity to the area! The design will be accessible for all ages and a variety of user groups. The park will offer opportunities for play, rejuvenation, gathering, and physical activity. New amenities in the park might include a sport court, seating, and community gathering area, and pathways. The hope is to begin work on this park this summer.

On this day, we celebrate the lives, experiences, contributions, diversity, and beauty of transgender and gender-diverse people, and commit to protecting trans voices, trans lives, trans happiness, and safety.

There will be a city-wide Drag Day of Solidarity happening on April 1st! With nearly 40 local businesses hosting all-ages and 18+ events all over Calgary and Okotoks, there has never been a better (or easier time) to show your love and support!

NEW Urban Hen Licensing Program

After the success of the 2022 urban hen pilot project that allowed 100 people to keep backyard hens, The City of Calgary is pleased to announce the official launch of a much-anticipated program recognizing urban hens as licenced pets under the updated Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) Bylaw.

The GreenLine is (still) the Backbone of Calgary's Best Future: An Update

Earlier this month, our office received an email from a 12-year-old resident sharing their support for the GreenLine LRT.

This email sparked a further conversation with its young author, but it also reminded us of an essay of support that we shared back in June of 2020, when the future of the GreenLine was a little less clear: The GreenLine is the backbone of Calgary’s best future.

We figured now would be a great time to include an update to that original essay, and share how we can best support the GreenLine going forward.

56th Annual Pathway and River Cleanup - May 5th to 7th, 2023

New Safe and Inclusive Access Bylaw

In response to ongoing and escalating threats, intimidation, and violence aimed at the safety and freedom of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Calgary City Council has approved the Safe and Inclusive Access Bylaw (C2023-0279).

This bylaw aims to strike a balance between providing safe and inclusive access to public services and respecting the right to protest.

Pathway Detour: Western Headworks Canal near 26 Street SE and 24 Avenue SE

Last fall, The City of Calgary started repairs on the IC9A outfall, located on the east bank of the Western Headworks Canal near the intersection of 26 Street S.E. and 24 Avenue S.E.

The final phase of construction will begin starting the week of March 6 and is expected to take three weeks to complete. Erin Wood Community Fridge Project Information Night
