Inglewood has deep roots: As Calgary’s oldest community, established in 1875, it was originally known as the neighbourhoods of East Calgary, Brewery Flats, Pearce Estates, and Inglewood. Historically, this area was a winter camping site for the Indigenous people in the area. It was an attractive spot due to the shelter provided by the trees along the river and the warm westerly winds we know as Chinooks.
Our Inglewood neighbours take immense pride in their rich history as Calgary’s founding community and work hard to ensure we preserve and share this history as Calgarians. Just east of Fort Calgary, Inglewood was voted Canada’s best neighbourhood in 2014. Through the promotion of arts and culture and the revitalization of its main street, 9 Avenue SE, which is known for its vibrant collection of shops and famed restaurants, Inglewood is embracing the future as well as the past. Home to many amenities, it isn’t hard to spend an entire day in Inglewood. From the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery, to the birthplace of Music Mile, to the serene Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, and the haunted rooms of the Deane House, Inglewood has something for everyone.

With the warmer weather comes another busy construction season for The City and the final construction season for the 4th Avenue Flyover. The bridge rehabilitation is still on track (and on budget) to be completed later this fall.
Crews recently completed another milestone, replacing the right barrier, leaving only a couple of major works left to complete on the bridge: paving and installing the sign structures.
Big changes are underway at the Calgary Zoo!
Exploration Asia is undergoing exciting renovations to create larger, more dynamic habitats and inspire even stronger connections between people and wildlife.
As part of this work, the seasonal West Gate, typically open from spring through fall, will remain closed this year. It is expected to reopen later in the 2028/2029 season.
Community Cleanup events provide an opportunity for Calgarians to dispose of items that do not fit in their waste and recycling carts. They also support community residents who do not have access to cart service.
All events take place on Saturdays or Sundays (from 9am to 2pm)
Beginning in mid-April, a series of borehole tests will take place to analyze ground conditions along the Green Line alignment. Work will occur on City-owned property and no significant impacts are expected on roadways. Each test will take one to two days. If more direct impacts are expected to residents or businesses, the Green Line team will coordinate directly with those affected.
Phase Two of the Inglewood Sanitary Trunk (IST) project is underway, with an anticipated completion date of July 2025.
As part of this project a concrete shaft was built above the normal ground elevation that will need to be leveled with the surrounding greenspace. Due to this, the top two metres of this shaft will need to be demolished to bring it below normal ground elevation so we can eventually plant grass and restore its original look. Once this has been completed, there will be manholes and a curved pipe/vent called a “gooseneck,” along with paving stones in the area so crews have access for required maintenance.
Early works for the 6 Street SE Underpass are expected to start Monday, March 31, 2025. The project will see a new vehicle link with the construction of an underpass for traffic under rail infrastructure, adding another access point to Calgary’s entertainment district as we prepared for some major developments in the area.
There are several ongoing infrastructure projects happening in Inglewood and Ramsay. Below is an at-a-glance look at the current status of each project. Beginning March 17 through to early April, the Green Line is undertaking a series of borehole tests, identifying utility locations along the future LRT alignment. The objective of this project is to determine whether existing utilities (owned by ATCO, ENMAX, The City of Calgary, Bell, TELUS and Shaw/Rogers) along the Green Line route need to be relocated or can be protected in place.
Test sites are limited to City-owned property but may impact general traffic in the area. There are approximately 200 locations across the SE Segment of the Green Line LRT, on City-owned land. Each investigation is expected to take one day with work happening between 9:00am and 3:30pm. Where there are potential impacts to residences or businesses, the Green Line team will contact those who may be directly affected.
Hey, Inglewood + Ramsay - sign up for the Ramsay/Inglewood Public Realm Improvements Newsletter to keep up to date with construction impacts in the area, expected to begin mid-April.
Public Realm Improvements along 11th Street SE and 12th Street SE have been identified as the first Stage of construction in Ramsay and Inglewood for the City’s Transit Oriented Development (TOD) program. This work will improve future connections to transit and nearby public spaces, while supporting multi-model transportation and investing in better public spaces.
The 4th Avenue Flyover is well on its way to being completed later this year, with construction moving forward steadily and crews working hard to keep the project on track.
Here’s a quick look at what’s coming up next:
The City of Calgary Transit Service Planning Group is working to better optimize bus routes and bus stop locations along the 9th Ave SE corridor from 8 Street to 15 Street SE.
Beginning in early March 2025, a total of 6 stops along the corridor will be removed, resulting in more reliable service at key hubs.
Due to changes in land use by the property owner, the parking lot immediately adjacent to the Inglewood Aquatic Centre has been permanently closed
Following the City of Calgary’s decision in November 2024 to extend the life of the aquatic facility, discussions took place with the parking lot’s landowner. However, an agreement for the use of the parking lot was not renewed due to the landowner's future development plans.
Join in one of Inglewood's longest-standing traditions, the Winter Carnival. Started in 1939, the Winter Carnival has been warming hearts and bringing smiles to faces for 86 years! This year honours some old traditions, like wagon rides and bingo, while also celebrating some new elements like Community Olympics, a group art project, and a tea party for our Inglewood Elders.
The 4th Avenue Flyover will need to fully close temporarily to complete repairs sustained by a vehicular incident. A section of the bridge’s barriers and rails sustained damage in the incident and require repairs, however the bridge is still safe to use.
The bridge will fully close overnight for two days:
February 13th beginning at 9 pm until February 14th at 5 am, and
February 14th beginning at 9 pm, until February 15th at 5 am.
Phase Two of the Inglewood Sanitary Trunk (IST) project is underway, with an anticipated completion date of July 2025.
In order to successfully complete this project, crews will have to close the righthand (south lane) of Memorial Drive eastbound between the Bridgeland C-train station and Baines Bridge (Zoo bridge). Traffic will be detoured to the centre and lefthand lane (north lane) for the duration of this work. It is anticipated that this work will take approximately six months to complete.

In late November, the Green Line team hosted three information sessions along the southeast portion of the alignment. We shared the current 60% design for stations between Ramsay/Inglewood and Shepard, as well as plans for bridges and guideways.
At this level of design, key elements have been established and can show Calgarians how these features will integrate within their communities.

During last week’s mid-cycle budget adjustments, Council voted to reconsider a prior motion to close the Inglewood Aquatic Centre later in December 2024 and to reinstate funding that will extend the operational life of the pool.
Our gratitude goes out to the passionate community members who rallied to advocate for this outcome. While this decision is a temporary stopgap to the eventual end-of-life closure of the pool, we are committed to continuing to enjoy this facility while we have it, and keeping it operational for as long as funding allocated for repairs allows or until the expansion of the MNP Sports Centre expansion is complete, anticipated in 2027.
The City of Calgary will be onsite to repair the water main on 11 St SE between 20 Ave SE and the CPKC railway tracks. Work is anticipated to begin on November 25, and is expected to be completed by December 13. This may vary depending on the condition of soil, existing utilities, and weather. We will proactively communicate any construction updates to those impacted by this work.
As GreenLine design work resumes between 4 Street SE and Shepard, the project team will be hosting several community information sessions in late November to share the most recent designs plans for the southeast stations. This is an opportunity for Calgarians to ask questions, learn more, and get an updated look at the project’s progress.
The City of Calgary has scheduled upcoming repairs to outfalls IC1 and IC2 near the Max Bell Arena. Construction is expected to begin in mid-November and will be complete in two to three weeks.
Today marked a monumental milestone in Calgary’s history as shovels hit the ground for the first phase of the Green Line LRT, Calgary’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure project to date. With representatives from all three levels of government in attendance, this groundbreaking ceremony kicked off the Phase 1 project and launched the start of construction on the transformative SE Segment of the Green Line.
The City of Calgary’s newly establihed Traffic Safety Team is ramping up enforcement this summer to crack down on excessively loud vehicles. The goal is to reduce noise pollution and support safer, more livable neighbourhoods.
Vehicle noise isn’t just a nuisance - it impacts mental and physical health, disrupts sleep, and lowers quality of life. Common violations include noisy exhausts, excessive engine revving, loud stereos, squealing tires, and modified mufflers. These issues are enforceable under the Traffic Safety Act.

Calgary has made history by becoming the first Canadian city to receive the prestigious Green Flag Award for its parks, an internationally recognized benchmark for excellence in public green spaces. Two of Calgary’s prime parks, Reader Rock Garden and Stanley Park, have met the award’s strict criteria, setting a new national standard for park quality and sustainability.
The Green Flag Award evaluates parks on multiple fronts: natural habitat preservation, cleanliness, safety, welcoming design, and long-term community engagement. Calgary’s success highlights a commitment to excellence in every category. Reader Rock Garden, already celebrated for its heritage restoration and cultural significance, shines as a well-maintained oasis in the city.

Commissioning of the newly installed equipment at the Glenmore and Bearspaw Water Treatment Plants is nearly complete and fluoride will start being reintroduced into drinking water starting Monday, June 30, 2025.
The City of Calgary follows Health Canada’s Guidance for Community Water Fluoridation, which identifies optimal fluoride levels to be 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L) to prevent and reduce tooth decay. To protect public health, we will begin adding fluoride gradually, carefully monitoring and adjusting the levels until we achieve the 0.7 mg/L optimal level.
