Utility Box Public Art Program: Applications Now Open!

Applications for the Utility Box Public Art program are currently being accepted.

The Utility Box Public Art program works with communities to create temporary artworks on local utility boxes. Selected community organizations will receive funding to partner with artists to create the artworks. The organizations can work with an artist of their choice or Calgary Arts Development can help connect you with an artist.

To be considered for this round of intake, please apply by May 31, 2024.

Foam Packaging Recycling Pilot Begins May 13th, 2024

Beginning May 13, Calgarians can bring their foam packaging, also known as Styrofoam, to any City of Calgary landfill location for recycling as part of a six-month pilot project free of charge .

Many Calgarians have been asking for a foam packaging recycling program like the ones offered by other nearby Alberta municipalities. The foam packaging pilot is an opportunity to further expand the City’s waste diversion programs to keep recyclable materials out of the landfill and ensuring these materials are recycled and turned into something new.

Update: Single-Use Items Bylaw Repealed

On May 7, 2024, Calgary City Council voted to repeal the Single-Use Items Charter Bylaw (1H2023). Effective immediately, as part of a bylaw, businesses will no longer be required to charge a minimum fee for new paper and reusable shopping bags or provide shopping bags and foodware accessories by request only.

While the bylaw is no longer in effect, businesses can voluntarily continue with waste reduction practices that best fit with their operations. Calgarians can expect that some businesses may continue to apply a fee to shopping bags, or ask if they require any foodware accessories before providing them.

Council’s vote only impacts The City of Calgary bylaw. The Government of Canada’s Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations still applies, which impacts business use of plastic single-use items such a shopping bags, cutlery and straws.

We had an exceptional group come out for this years walk, exploring and interpreting Inglewood through the books of Jane Jacobs and evoking discussions on neighbourhoods and communities at their best in the face of the worst.

Establishing and maintaining a YardSmart yard and garden will help you do your part to use less water. A YardSmart garden is well suited to Calgary’s growing conditions and will fare better during drought conditions.

The City of Calgary wants to highlight some important information about what Calgarians can expect at the upcoming April 22 Public Hearing Meeting of Council on Calgary's Housing Strategy 2024-2030 - Land Use Amendment Citywide, LOC2024-0017, and Land Use Bylaw Amendments, CPC2024-0213.

This is the largest Public Hearing that The City has ever held, with more than 650 speakers registered at last count and 5,515 written submissions.

As more and more people begin their outdoor yard work, it is important to remember that Alberta continues to experience high levels of drought. Together, we can make every drop count and help manage water supply in the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

Alberta Bike Swap provides a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bikes, fund safe CAN-BIKE cycling education, provide bike racks, pledge cyclists in charity rides, and help others with transportation security. Annual events happen in both Calgary and Edmonton. Over the last 14 years, Alberta Bike Swap has helped thousands of people find their perfect bike.

This years Calgary event is taking place Saturday, May 4th at the Max Bell Centre.

2024 Neighbour Day Kick-Off Events - May 4

One of the best days of the year is just around the corner! Neighbour Day is Calgary’s celebration of community connection. Held each year on the third Saturday in June, Neighbour Day is a step toward creating welcoming and inclusive communities where neighbours connect and belong every day of the year.

Neighbour Day 2024 will include two kick-off events on May 4 to help raise awareness of Neighbour Day and invite Calgarians to start planning their own Neighbour Day block party or community event for June 15.

Franklin Station Area Improvements - Public Engagement

The City of Calgary is exploring a Land Use change and public space improvements at the Franklin CTrain Station, located in the community of Albert Park/Radisson Heights.

The project area includes the south Park’n’Ride lot of the station, nearby park space, and the appearance of a portion of Radcliffe Drive SE. The focus of the project is to improve mobility, connectivity, and safety to and from Franklin Station, and prepare the site for future residential development to help address current housing shortages and affordability.

Once complete, the project will create a vibrant, affordable, and sustainable community.

These grants contribute to the transformation of space-to-place throughout Calgary's landscape, and foster valuable community connections in the process.

Do you or your organization have the next great idea involving placemaking, traffic calming, tactical urbanism, public art, activating underutilized spaces, or other ways to increase the quality of your neighbourhood spaces? You and your community could receive up to $5,000 to put towards your project.

2024 Jane's Walk: Free Community-Led Waling Tours - May 3-5

Jane’s Walk 2024 is back and taking place May 3rd through 5th. Calgarians of all ages are invited to participate in free walking tours throughout a variety of communities and areas of interest in the city!

A global event inspired by and in honour of Jane Jacobs, an urbanist and activist who championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Jane believed that in order to properly observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging, we need to get out and walk the city.

BOB BAHAN AQUATIC & FITNESS CENTRE - MAINTENANCE CLOSURE

In order to facilitate urgent electrical repairs, Bob Bahan Aquatic & Fitness Centre will need to temporarily close.

Beginning April 14, 2024, service will be reduced to only swimming lessons and swim clubs in preparation for the repairs, followed by a full facility closure on May 6, 2024. At this time, we anticipate the facility will be closed for approximately three to four months.

REZONING: WHAT COULD WARD 9 LOOK LIKE?

Did you know that currently more than 97% of R-CG rezoning applications brought before council are approved?

Some of the feedback we’ve heard about rezoning is that people are most often ok with the allowance of duplexes, but can feel less certain about the change to permit row houses. The City estimates that over the course of the next 3-4 years, we will begin to see a city-wide shift in row house applications from about 150 submissions annually, growing to about 500 submissions annually before things level off. Over a 10 year span, that equates to about 3,900 parcels changing from single-family or duplexes to row houses.
