Calgary Fire and Water Services training in Ward 9
As part of The City’s commitment to protect the public and environment, joint training sessions for Calgary Fire and Water Services are scheduled The training will focus on responding to substance spills or releases into waterbodies, ranging from daily routine cleanups all the way to large incidents requiring activation of Water Services’ emergency operations or The City of Calgary Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
This training supports The City’s new Environmental Release into Waterbodies Emergency Response Plan, which will bring together response crews from various business units. These type of regular training events help prepare for a variety of incidents, including emergency situations, and provides an opportunity to streamline processes.
Training Dates
Wednesday, April 30 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, May 1 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 28 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, May 29 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Location
Training will occur at Forest Lawn Creek, east of Elliston Park (map)
Training Activities
Installing booms in the creek and deploying other spill mitigation measures around the Forest Lawn Creek outfall; and,
Restricting the creek’s flow, meaning the water may rise at some points. Note the water will in no way impact the public.
What to Expect:
Members of the public may notice:
Lights from City vehicles and CFD fire trucks;
Specialized equipment trailers; and,
About 50 attendees in that area, including some working in the creek. The site and activities will be visible from Stoney Trail South and from along the bike pathway within the park.
Sandwich board signage will be placed along the pathway to notify the public and information will be provided to 311 to respond to any public inquiries. Nearby community associations will also be informed.
