Mowing Update: August 2025
Calgary saw higher-than-normal rainfall in July and August, leading to saturated turf and unusually thick grass growth across parks, playfields, and roadsides. This has extended mowing times and increased the number of mowing-related 311 requests. The Ward 9 office also received an increase in outreach from constituents concerned about long grass and delays in mowing neighbourhood parks and public spaces.
How the City has Responded
All available mowing equipment and crews have been mobilized, with additional shifts added to keep up with growth.
Contractors and City staff are working together to mow rapidly growing grass first, then return to clean up clippings to stay on schedule.
Additional mowing equipment will be acquired for 2026 to further increase capacity during peak growing periods.
Current Progress
The seventh mowing cycle for community and regional parks is underway, with most areas more than 50% complete and scheduled to finish by September 10. Last year, the season averaged six cycles in total.
The third mowing cycle for roadside greens is in progress, with some areas already into their fourth and final cycle, expected to finish by September 20.
Mowing complaints rose in August due to rapid grass growth and clippings but have since declined.
Next Steps
Moisture levels are expected to extend the growing season. Crews will continue to be deployed where most needed to maintain cycle targets. We appreciate your understanding as the City works to complete mowing throughout Calgary.
