Traffic Safety Team Targets noisy vehicles this summer
The City of Calgary’s newly establihed Traffic Safety Team is ramping up enforcement this summer to crack down on excessively loud vehicles. The goal is to reduce noise pollution and support safer, more livable neighbourhoods.
Vehicle noise isn’t just a nuisance - it impacts mental and physical health, disrupts sleep, and lowers quality of life. Common violations include noisy exhausts, excessive engine revving, loud stereos, squealing tires, and modified mufflers. These issues are enforceable under the Traffic Safety Act.
Peace officers use tools like calibrated decibel meters, body-worn cameras, and location data to monitor and document violations. Fines include:
$270 for operating a vehicle over the legal noise limit
$300 for refusing to comply with a noise level test
Residents can report persistent or problematic noise through 311 by phone, online, or via the 311 app. Urgent safety issues should be reported to Calgary Police by calling 911. These reports help the City target enforcement in high-impact areas.
Drivers can help by:
Keeping their vehicles well-maintained
Restoring modified exhaust systems
Avoiding unnecessary revving or loud music
The Traffic Safety Team works closely with other City departments and the Calgary Police Service to improve road safety and respond to community concerns.
