Green Line Constuction: Noise Impact Assessment for EVRAZ Calgary
In response to community concerns around noise assoicatited with Green Line construction of the 78 Ave SE tunnel on Ogdendale Road, EVRAZ (the City of Calgary’s contractor) engaged a third-party consultant to complete a detailed noise assessment of their work.
This study was conducted to better understand any potential impacts of construction and to ensure continued compliance with the City of Calgary's noise bylaw. The report confirms that operations remain within allowable limits and includes modeled sound levels at the property boundary, both before and after construction.
In addition, following community feedback regarding back-up alarms on constuction vehicles, steps are being taken to switch to a different type of alarm system. This new system has been used on other sites near residential areas and continues to meet all Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements while producing a more localized, less disruptive sound. This change supports the contractors commitment to maintaining safety while reducing noise impacts on the community.
Ongoing communication with the City of Calgary and the Millican-Ogden Community Assocaitons is a priority for EVREZ. Regular meetings will continue, and any relevant information that may affect the community will be shared promptly.
If you have any concerns or feedback, please feel free to connect with Millican-Ogden Community Association Board or the Ward 9 office.
Summary of Noise Impact Assessment Complete for EVRAZ Calgary
EVRAZ retained Patching Associates Acoustical Engineering Ltd. (PAAE) to conduct a Noise Impact Assessment (NIA) for the existing EVRAZ Pipe Manufacturing Facility located at 7201 Ogdendale Road S.E. Calgary, Alberta. This NIA was conducted in accordance with the requirements of the City of Calgary’s Community Standards Bylaw Number 32M2023.
This noise assessment was undertaken to determine the environmental noise impact of the current EVRAZ Pipe Manufacturing Facility on the adjacent residential neighborhood of Lynnwood. Noise monitoring was conducted at two locations along the west side of the subject facility in the residential area to monitor the current facility operating conditions simultaneously with diagnostics measurements of the operations.
The noise monitoring results from May 27-29, 2024, indicate that the noise levels at the two nearby locations ranged between 58.1 dBA and 63.8 dBA during the daytime and 57.8 dBA and 59.2 dBA during the nighttime with the normal operation of subject facility. The measured levels include the contribution from the nearby construction activities (daytime only), road traffic, CP railway operations, aircraft flyovers in this area as well as contributions by the subject facility.
The table below summarizes the overall Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) predictions from the model for each receiver in the study area from the current EVRAZ Pipe Manufacturing Facility with the normal operation. The facility SPL is the overall SPL from all the equipment operations of the subject facility. The predicted results indicate that the noise levels of the subject facility only are expected to meet both the daytime and nighttime Bylaw SPL limits at the modeled residential locations.
Considering that the current EVRAZ Pipe Manufacturing facility operates below the Bylaw target levels of 65 dBA daytime and 50 dBA nighttime, and is at least 5 dBA less than the ambient, PAAE confirmed no additional noise control measures are recommended to comply with the City of Calgary’s Community Standards Bylaw at this time.
