Former Ogden Legion Building to be Demolition Amid Safety Concerns
The former Ogden Legion building, once a vibrant gathering place for veterans and community members alike, is finally slated for demolition due to significant, ongoing safety concerns. Located at the corner of 78 Avenue and Ogden Road SE, the building has been vacant since 2012 and has since become a hotspot for vandalism and unauthorized occupancy.
The City of Calgary issued a demolition order in October 2024, citing the building’s deteriorating condition and risks to public safety. That decision was upheld by the Licence and Community Standards Appeal Board, which raised concerns about emergency access in case of an incident.
That process was delayed by a judicial review requested by the property owner, however, the Court of King’s Bench has now dismissed that appeal, clearing the way for demolition to begin. The City has confirmed that the property owner has contracted a demolition company to complete the work, but that the City will step in and take over if work is not being completed.
A huge thank you to the Millican-Ogden Community Association and all the residents who have consistently raised concerns and advocated for outcome. It’s been a long wait as this issue worked its way through the legal system, but we’re relieved that the path is finally clear to move forward.
