Update: Former Ogden Legion Building to be Demolition Amid Safety Concerns
The City of Calgary is actively moving forward with the demolition of the former Ogden Legion building. An Order to demolish the structure is in place and has exhausted all appeal options. We are now in the planning phase of the demolition process.
Located at the corner of 78 Avenue and Ogden Road SE, the former Ogden Legion was once a vibrant gathering place for veterans and community members alike. Vacant since 2012, the building has unfortunately become a hotspot for vandalism and unauthorized occupancy, raising ongoing safety concerns for the surrounding community.
At this stage, an external contractor is conducting a full hazard assessment of the site. We expect to receive the results of this assessment in the coming weeks. These findings will help determine the specific permits required to proceed safely. Based on the age and condition of the building, it is highly likely that asbestos and other hazards will be identified.
Due to the size of the structure and the complexity of the work involved, including hazardous material abatement, permitting, and ensuring all safety protocols are followed, this process will take time. However, we want to assure the community that this file is a top priority for The City’s Problem Properties Team, and we are committed to seeing it through with care and urgency.
We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
Once again, thank you to the Millican-Ogden Community Association and all the residents who have consistently raised concerns and advocated for outcome. It’s been a long wait as this issue worked its way through the legal system, but we’re relieved that the path is finally clear to move forward.
