Dover Neighbourhood Streets Project

The Dover Neighbourhood Streets Project is helping create streets where everyone can move safely and comfortably, whether you are walking or wheeling.

This summer, we are moving forward with improvements along 34th Avenue SE in the Dover community.

This work will be done in two phases:

• Phase 1 will repurpose the north side of the corridor for new wheeling lanes, using a combination of permanent and temporary materials, and planting native grasses and flowers in the new boulevard spaces and existing median.

• Phase 2 will replace any temporary materials with permanent materials and add new signals at the intersection of 34 Avenue S.E. and 36 Street S.E., once funding is secured.

Construction is anticipated to begin mid-July and be completed by the end of 2022. We appreciate your patience while crews are working in the area. We know that construction impacts can be disruptive, and we will work to mitigate impacts as best we can.

What can I expect during construction?

34 Avenue S.E. will remain open during construction; however, there will be temporary lane closures while crews are working. While construction is underway, you can expect:

• An increase in on-site construction activity, along with noise, dust and vibration.

• Sidewalk detours will ensure pedestrians and cyclists can still travel safely through the area.

• While we don't expect any utility shut-downs, you will be notified if the need arises.

• Temporary transit stop relocations.

ANIDA Food Insecurity Survey

All Nations International Development Agency (ANIDA) focuses on implementing poverty-alleviation strategies, operating in Canada, Jamaica, Ghana, Liberia and the Philippines.

This year, ANIDA reached a historic milestone in working to expand its operations to Calgary. To better assist communities, they are hoping to collect some opinions and feedback on food insecurity.

Residents in Alyth/Bonnybrook/Manchester, Bridgeland/Riverside, Inglewood and Ramsay are invited to respond to a brief survey regarding food access and security in your community. Your feedback will help better inform ANIDA’s response and future programming.

Unite the Heights - 8 Avenue N. Functional Planning Study

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The City is moving forward with the Unite the Heights initiative and is currently conducting a Functional Planning Study along 8 Avenue N. (between 2 Street N.W. and McKinnon Drive N.E., as well as sections of the connecting roadways of McKinnon Drive N.E. and Maunsell Close N.E.)

Based on the community’s existing and future needs, the Functional Planning Study will identify recommendations to enhance active mode infrastructure connectivity and accessibility, as well as safety for all users of the corridor. The recommendations from this study will help guide future investment in the area to achieve improved connections for active transportation network users.

Based on the analysis of technical data and community feedback gathered during public engagement, the project team will identify, develop and refine concept design options to improve active modes transportation along the corridor. Once we have a holistic understanding of the area, we can design a comprehensive strategy to support active modes of transportation and increase safety and accessibility of the corridor.

The project team has also been developing designs for low cost, small-scale spot improvements, which will be implemented this year. Improvements include wheelchair ramp and intersection upgrades, sidewalk remediation, and improved pedestrian crossings along 8 Avenue N.E. between Renfrew Drive N.E. and 16A Street N.E. This work is necessary to enhance active transportation options for those who walk, wheel, and drive in the area and will aim to complement any potential future corridor improvements.

Overall, this project will provide a plan to improve active transportation infrastructure along the 8 Avenue N. corridor and to increase safety and mobility for all road users in the area. The recommendations arising from the Functional Planning Study will provide a strategic guide for future investment in the area that aligns with the needs of the community.

Albert Park Radisson Heights Neighbour Day

The Albert Park Radisson Heights Community Association is Hosting their Neighbour Day Celebration on June 18th!

Pop by the community garden for hot dogs, salad, ice cream, and drinks.

They will also be collecting donations of clothing and small household items for newly settled Ukrainian families.

East Calgary Commumity Fair

On Saturday, June 11th, pop by the East Calgary Community Fair at the Ernie Starr Arena - 4812 14th Ave SE. Happening from 10am - 2pm, stop by for lots of family fun and entertainment.

This event will showcase resources within the community, engaging residents by offering entertainment to all age demographics, and focusing on the diverse cultural richness and talents of local artists, including the Awo Taan drummers. 

There will be indoor and outdoor activities, allowing residents to connect with East Calgary neighbours. A Fresh Routes market will be taking place just behind Ernie Starr, making affordable produce available to all residents.

Water Services Repair: 4th Avenue NE

The City of Calgary wastewater repair crews will be replacing a manhole and section of pipe on 4 Avenue N.E. This work will ensure the continued reliability of our wastewater collection system for residents in the area. Due to the depth of the infrastructure and the space needed for the equipment required, we must close the intersection at 6 Street N.E. and 4 Avenue N.E. to complete this urgent repair. No disruptions to services will occur.

Construction will begin on Thursday, May 26 and, including paving, is anticipated to be complete the evening of Wednesday, June 1.

Construction Details

• Work is estimated to take six business days (including Saturday), and will commence May 26.

• There will be no disruptions to services. You can still flush toilets, run water, etc.

• Work hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

• Construction fencing will be installed for safety.

• Signage (and safety fencing) will clearly mark the area of construction.

Traffic Impacts

• The intersection at 6 Street N.E. and 4 Avenue N.E. will be closed for the duration of the work. The north curb lanes of 4 Avenue N.E. will remain open to allow uninterrupted access to residents of the cul-de-sac on 6 Street N.E., north of the intersection. See the attached map.

• 4 Avenue N.E., between 4A Street N.E. and 7 Street N.E., will be accessible to local traffic only (no through traffic).

• The following intersections will have wastewater bypass pumps set up around the manholes. Please drive with caution through these areas.

  • 5 Street N.E. and 4 Avenue N.E.

  • 6A Street N.E. and 4 Avenue N.E.

  • 6 Street N.E and 3 Avenue N.E.

• Message boards will be strategically placed with information about the closure.

• Citizens can expect traffic disruptions for approximately seven days. The traffic control measures are required to ensure the safety of the workers and the public.

We understand that this work is an inconvenience, and we apologize. Thank you for your patience. We are committed to completing this work in a timely manner so that we can continue providing safe and reliable wastewater removal.

Dover Music in the Garden

Music in the Garden returns this summer! Beginning June 10, pop by the Twin Views Communal Garden in Dover every other Friday for live music, a local vendor market, and fun for residents of all ages.

Proposed Telecommunications Facility in Lynnwood

Wireless services have become an integral part of Canadians’ lives. Whether to stay in touch with family and friends, consume content, or work while on the move, wireless services have become indispensable for most Canadians.

A new facility has been identified as needed to better serve the communities of Lynnwood, Ogden, and Millican. This new infrastructure will enhance telecommunications coverage and capacity and will improve wireless connectivity and access to emergency services.

Rogers and their partner, Land Solutions, have identified a site in Lynnwood Park (near 69th Ave SE and the parking lot for Jack Setter Arena) as a potential site for the tower.

An Open House will be held Thursday, May 26th from 5-7pm at the Glenmore Inn & Convention Centre (1000 Glenmore Court SE.) Residents are encouraged to attend this in-person event to learn more about the proposed development and have any questions or concerns addressed.
