2025 Salvation Army Backpack + School Supply Fundraiser

4 Avenue flyover reopening ahead of schedule

Good news for Calgary: both lanes of the 4 Avenue Flyover are now open during peak hours, ahead of schedule!

Since April, the bridge had been reduced to a single lane of traffic in order to accommodate essential upgrades, extending the life of Calgary’s longest bridge for decades to come.

Fluoride Reintroduction Project Update

Commissioning of the newly installed equipment at the Glenmore and Bearspaw Water Treatment Plants is nearly complete and fluoride will start being reintroduced into drinking water starting Monday, June 30, 2025.

The City of Calgary follows Health Canada’s Guidance for Community Water Fluoridation, which identifies optimal fluoride levels to be 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L) to prevent and reduce tooth decay. To protect public health, we will begin adding fluoride gradually, carefully monitoring and adjusting the levels until we achieve the 0.7 mg/L optimal level.

2025 Servus Calgary Marathon: Road Closures May 24 + 25

The 2025 Servus Calgary Marathon is taking place on Sunday, May 25th. Celebrating its 60th year, the Calgary Marathon is Canada’s longest running marathon and Alberta’s Best Road Race.

Mail Disruption During Canada Post Strike

Please Note: Due to pending Canada Post strike action set to begin on May 23, 2025, the City of Calgary mailroom will be unable to provide Canada Post delivery starting May 21, 2025, until the situation is resolved.

This means we will be unable to send mail during this time, including orders for Ward 9 Map and Pedestrian Access Cards for the Zoo.

Other City of Calgary services that rely on mail may also be affected. Online payments remain available for many services such as parking tickets, animal licences, tax payments, and home permits. However, if you have pending payments or rely on mail delivery for other City services, please visit the City of Calgary website for more information on how this action may imapact you.

Franklin Station Improvements: Housing Provider Selected

Calgary Zoo: Ongoing West Gate Closure

Big changes are underway at the Calgary Zoo’s Exploration Asia area as the as they undertake exciting renovations to create larger, more dynamic habitats, and inspire even stronger connections between people and wildlife.

As part of this work, the seasonal West Gate, typically open from the spring through the fall, will remain closed for this season. It is expected the West Gate won’t reopen until at later in 2028/2029 season.

During this time, all access to the Zoo will need to be through the main North Gate.

Celebrating 30 Years of HMCS Calgary: A Deepening Bond Between Ship and City

On May 12, 2025, Calgary honored the 30th anniversary of the commissioning of HMCS Calgary, a Halifax-class frigate, by raising the ship's flag at City Hall. This event highlighted the enduring relationship between the City of Calgary and the Royal Canadian Navy vessel that proudly bears its name.

The ceremony coincided with significant historical commemorations, including the 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe Day and the end of the Battle of the Atlantic. These events underscore Calgary's longstanding commitment to recognizing military service and heritage.

HMCS Calgary maintains a unique connection to its namesake city. The ship's crew is distinguished by wearing Smithbilt cowboy hats, a Calgary tradition, making it the only vessel in the Royal Canadian Navy with such a uniform exemption. Additionally, the ship features Calgary memorabilia, such as street signs and artifacts from the Olympics.

The City's dedication to this relationship is further exemplified by the establishment of the Friends of HMCS Calgary Committee, which became an official entity within the City of Calgary during the ship's 25th anniversary. This committee fosters ongoing connections between the ship's crew and the Calgary community.

Join us for a weekend of events in Victoria from June 13–16 to celebrate HMCS Calgary’s 30th Anniversary. Highlights include a golf tournament, dockyard and ship tours, a family-friendly charity event, and a public celebration at Ogden Point featuring live music, navy displays, and a pancake breakfast.

HMCS Calgary’s Annual Barn Burner Event: July 2, 2025

If sticking closer to home is more your speed, kick off Stampede with a special evening honouring the 30th anniversary of HMCS Calgary. Join us on Wednesday, July 2 from 6–9 pm at ATCO Park’s Blue Flame Kitchen for an unforgettable night of great food, live music, family-friendly fun, and community spirit — all in support of two great Calgary charities.

HMCS Calgary Road Hockey Rodeo: July 12, 2025

The 2025 Road Hockey Rodeo is a high-energy 3-on-3 street hockey tournament for youth aged 12–17, hosted by the Friends of HMCS Calgary Committee and the crew of HMCS Calgary. Held during Stampede, the event brings together young players, navy sailors, Calgary first responders, and special guests for a fun, inclusive day of friendly competition. The City of Calgary and the Nations of the Blackfoot Confederacy have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding on Communication and Cooperation (MOU), solidifying a renewed partnership grounded in trust, respect, reciprocity, and honesty. This is the first formal agreement of its kind between the City and the Blackfoot Confederacy, and it marks a meaningful step toward deeper collaboration.

New Year-Round Day Spaces to Support Calgarians Experiencing Homelessness

More Support for Community Events in Ward 9

Establised in 2003, the Ward Community Event Fund (WCEF) was created to support community groups, non-profits, and local organizations hosting events or launching initiatives that strengthen and connect our neighbourhoods.

On April 29, 2025, Council approved an additional $280,000 in funding for the WCEF for 2025 and 2026. A total of $20,000 is now available to each ward to support events and initiatives in each year.

Indian Residential School Memorial Project: Design Engagement

In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation The City of Calgary is creating a permanent memorial to honour the Indian Residential School survivors.

The Indian Residential School Memorial is an important project that advances The City of Calgary’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, specifically Call to Action #82 in the TRC report, establish monument to commemorate all Indian Residential School Survivors, lost children, and inter-generational trauma survivors. 

We continue to move through the second phase of the Indian Residential School (IRS) Memorial Project, and are pleased to invite you to share your feedback on four design concepts for the future permanent memorial.

2025 Ward 9 Community Cleanup Events

Community Cleanup events provide an opportunity for Calgarians to dispose of items that do not fit in their waste and recycling carts. They also support community residents who do not have access to cart service.

All events take place on Saturdays or Sundays (from 9am to 2pm)
